.Mobi General FAQs

What are the valid characters for a .Mobi domain name?

.Mobi domain names can contain the English-language letters A through Z, and the digits 0 through 9. You can also use hyphens, but hyphens cannot begin or end your domain name. Spaces and special characters (such as !, $, &, ?, and so on) are never permitted.

What are the minimum and maximum lengths for a .Mobi domain name?

The minimum length is 3 characters, and the maximum length is 63 characters (excluding the "http://www" and ".mobi" portions).

How do I make updates to my domain record, or add nameservers?

To make a change, you must log in to your Domain The Net account.

When can I transfer my domain name?

Domains cannot be transferred from one registrar to another:

  • during the 60 days after the domain was created.
  • in the 60 days following a registrar-to-registrar transfer.
  • If the domain is on ClientTransferProhibited status. The registrar can remove this status.
  • If the domain is on ServerTransferProhibited status. The registrar cannot remove this status. The status is applied in certain domain operations and periods, such as the Redemption Hold period.

Also, note that Sunrise domains have special restrictions on them that may prevent transfers. A Sunrise domain name registrant may lose ownership of his/her domain names as a result of a challenge proceeding, thereby rendering him/her unable to deliver a name to you.

How do I transfer my domain name?

For Registrant-to-Registrant Transfers - use Domain The Net's Registrant Transfer service:

To transfer your domain from your current registrar to be managed with Domain The Net:

  1. Obtain the authorization code from the current sponsoring registrar of the domain. Please consult the WHOIS to find out who the sponsoring registrar is.
  2. After you receive your authorization code, supply it to our support team.
  3. We will then initiate the transfer. Once initiated, the transfer will be completed in five 24-hour periods.

Why does my domain have a "hold" status?

This status is placed upon any domain that does not have at least two nameservers associated with it. The hold status means that the domain will not propagate to the zone file, and will not be usable on the Internet. Once you add two nameservers , the "hold" status will automatically be taken off and the domain will propagate correctly.

Are there any technical requirements for websites with a .mobi domain name?

At this stage there are 3 mandatory practices published by the .mobi registry for developing mobile content and services:

  • In order to provide an overall usability and premium user experience, when a .mobi web site is accessed the response must be encoded in XHTML-MP unless the device accessing it is known to support an alternative choice of markup. If the site provides its home page by redirection then all intermediate pages that are delivered in the course of the redirection must comply with this rule.
  • Web sites using a .mobi domain name must implement a page at the second level domain i.e. a web server must respond to HTTP requests to example.mobi (if necessary in addition to www.example.mobi).
  • Web sites using a .mobi domain name must not use frames under any circumstances. i.e. in HTML, XHTML or other mark-up languages that support similar constructs, frames must not be present.

The .mobi registry published a guide containing a mixture of mandatory and recommended requirements - the .mobi’s Switch On Guide
