.EU was derived from "European Union", the TLD was approved 1999 as ccTLD (country code top level domain) for the European Union. On April 2006 the TLD was opened for public registration, within 2 months .eu reached around 3 million registered domains .EU is managed by the European Commission, EURid; it`s considered the 9th largest TLD and 5th ccTLD in the world.
The massive European Union began to form in the 1950s and has grown ever since; today it is composed of 28 member states located primarily in Europe, of which 19 members use euro as their legal tender. The EU covers a stunning total area of 4,423,147 square kilometers, its member states each offer their own art, nature, history, and cuisine; The Colosseum and Florence city both in Italy, the Acropolis of Athens in Greece were some of the first European capitals of culture, followed by many more.
The European Commission is responsible for the everyday running of the EU; it operates with 28 Commissioners, one from each member state.
The EU has developed a system of laws and a single market applying to all 28 member states, this aims to allow free movement of people and trades.
Treaties state that the EU was "founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities ... in a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men prevail."
The EU provides humanitarian aid to developing countries around the world and in 2012 was appropriately awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
