The ccTLD was originally administered by Jon Postel of the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California; today however it is managed by Neustar.
Until 2002 .US domain names would be registered under a fourth-level domain hierarchy

Today however, .US domain names have no unusual restrictions except registrants must be US citizens, residents, or organizations.
